POTTERY CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS

Pottery, including both handbuilding and throwing on the wheel, has been a core discipline at the Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts for many years.  Beginner, intermediate and advanced pottery classes and workshops are offered during all class sessions and student spots are always in high demand.

All pottery classes and workshops are held in the pottery studio on the first floor of the Guild building at 113 Kam Lake Road, Yellowknife, NT.  

Online registration for Winter 2023 pottery classes and workshops opened on January 9, 2023.  Refer to the class/workshop listings below for descriptions of classes in which spaces may remain available and for details including eligible membership levels, prerequisites and other requirements for registration.

CLASS REGISTRATION

Membership in the Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts is required for participation in all classes and workshops.  To ensure that our programs are as accessible as possible, we offer several different membership levels.  Registration details for each program indicate the level of membership required and any necessary prerequisites.  Based on the preference of the instructor, some programs may require proof of Covid-19 vaccination.

Classes and workshops offered during fall, winter and spring sessions.  Registration is conducted online and spaces are in high demand.  We recommend that members and prospective students subscribe to our newsletter and check our website regularly to learn about upcoming classes and workshops.

Registration and materials fees for classes and workshops are non-refundable except in very limited circumstances.  Membership fees must be paid in advance of registration and are non-refundable even if a particular class or workshop is unavailable.  Acknowledgement of our refund policy is a condition of registration.  Registrations cannot be transferred between students or between classes or workshops.

    This class will introduce kids to the magic of working with clay using basic hand forming methods.  The number of pieces created will depend on the child’s interest and engagement - the focus will be on having fun while playing with clay.

    Instructor:  Rachel Makohoniuk

    Prerequisites:  Ages 7 to 12 only.

    Cost:  $130 (includes clay)

    The purpose of Guild pottery studio member orientation is to get new or returning studio potters orientated to the space outside of structured class time, so that they are aware of all of the tools and equipment available to them as well the roles and responsibilities of studio members in terms of clean-up and volunteer duties.  All new members signing up for scheduled open studio or full studio access must attend one of these sessions before commencing their studio access.

    Instructor:  Janet Diveky

    Prerequisites:  Completion of one Guild pottery class or prior pottery studio experience.  Approval from the Guild pottery rep to join as a scheduled open studio or full studio potter (must be uploaded during registration).  Age 16 or older.

    Cost:  Free for studio potters.

    Learn the basics of wheel thrown pottery: wedging, centering, throwing simple shapes, trimming, firing and glazing.

    Instructor:  Georgina Williston

    Prerequisites:  No prior experience necessary.  Age 16 or older.

    Cost:  $260 (includes clay)

    This class will teach you how to center larger amounts of clay and will refine skills learned in Level 1 or 1b wheel classes.  It will also introduce students to more advanced skills such as adding handles and lids.

    Instructors: Wendy Stephenson and Garry Singer

    Prerequisites:  One or more beginner-level (level 1 or 1b) wheel classes; able to center clay and make basic cylinders on the wheel.  Age 16 or older.

    Cost:  $260 (includes clay)

    Experiment with hand building and wheel throwing to explore how to get clay to do what you want. Techniques will include how to make a mug, a bowl, a plate and how to glaze. If you’re a teen 13-15 years old who is interested in the art and science of clay, this class is for you!
