OUR BUILDING AND STUDIOS

The Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts is located at 113 Kam Lake Road in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.  The building is our first independent home in our 70+ year history.  The first floor is occupied by our pottery studio while the second floor is used for our mixed media studio and library and provides meeting/presentation space.

POTTERY STUDIO


The pottery studio is located on the first floor of our building and has a large array of equipment for use by studio potters and pottery classes, including the following:

  • 9 electric wheels
  • slab roller
  • 2 large handbuilding and glazing tables
  • 2 extruders
  • pugmill
  • shelving for greenware and bisqueware
  • ventilated kiln room with 3 electric kilns
  • glaze making room with exhaust fan
  • glaze spray booth
  • variety of throwing, handbuilding and glazing tools
  • cone 5 and cone 6 glazes mixed by studio potters 

GUILD LIBRARY


The Guild library is located in a corner of the mixed media studio on the second floor of our building.  The library contains an extensive collection of books on pottery and ceramics, weaving, knitting, basketry, felting and other arts and crafts.  Donations to the collection are always welcome.

MEETING/PRESENTATION SPACE

The second floor of the Guild building is suitable for small to medium gatherings such as meetings, presentations and seminars.  We often use the space for slideshows by visiting artists.  The space is furnished with chairs and large tables and equipped with a projection system and room-darkening blinds. 

The space is available for daily or evening rental when not in use for Guild activities.

MIXED MEDIA STUDIO


The mixed media studio is located on second floor of our building and provides space for a variety of disciplines.  Equipment available for use by members and classes includes the following:

Weaving:

  • 6 Schacht Cricket rigid heddle looms (15" width)
  • 7 Leclerc Dorothy 4-shaft table looms (15" width)
  • 2 Leclerc 4-shaft jack floor looms (36" width)
  • 2 Leclerc 4-shaft counterbalance floor looms (36" and 45" widths)
  • 3 warping mills and 2 warping boards
  • 2 inkle looms
  • shuttles, bobbins, swifts, ball winder, bobbin winder

Felting:

  • rollers
  • plastic
  • bamboo blinds and bubble wrap
  • drum carder and hand cards

Dyeing:

  • dyepots
  • hot plates, slow cookers and microwaves
  • supply of dyes, mordants and assists

Batik:

  • brushes
  • stretchers
  • tjantings
  • waxes, material and dyes

Basketry:

  • bathtub
  • extra tubs for soaking and sorting

Spinning:

  • spinning wheels

Stained Glass:

  • grinders and glass cutters
  • soldering irons
  • Morton cutting system
  • supply of glass

Silversmithing:

  • acetylene torch
  • various hand tools

ONLINE STORE FOR MEMBERS

The Guild does not operate as an arts and craft supply store but members can purchase clay and some mixed media supplies through our online store.  Surplus materials from classes and workshops may also be available for purchase by members wishing to work on extra projects.
