Upcoming Mixed Media Classes and Workshops

STAINED GLASS (BEGINNER)

This 8-week adult class introduces the Tiffany method of working with stained glass.  Students are familiarized with stained glass materials, glass working tools, and patterns. Skills learned include glass scoring, breaking, grinding, copper foiling, soldering, and finishing.  Class projects consist of a sun catcher followed by a project chosen by the student.  No prior experience is required for this class.

SILVERSMITHING

This 4-week adult class introduces techniques for working with sterling silver and copper to make jewelry and decorative objects. In a small group, students work on a project of their own choosing.  Skills learned include cutting, soldering, and shaping.  No prerequisites apply for this class and students with prior experience will be supported in further development of their skills.

WEAVING

Adult weaving classes and workshops are offered on a regular basis using both rigid heddle and multi-shaft looms.  Rigid heddle weaving provides a gentle introduction to the basic concepts of weaving.  Multi-shaft weaving, whether using table or floor looms, allows for more complex projects but is more time-consuming.  Project-based workshops explore specific techniques or the creation of particular items.  Class duration and any prerequisities vary.

KNITTING

Adult knitting classes are offered on a regular basis and are typically based on a project which introduces or explores specific techniques or the creation of a particular item.  Examples of knitting classes include beginner knitting, introduction to sock knitting, thrummed mittens, introduction to lace knitting and more.  Class duration and any prerequisities vary.

NEEDLE FELTING

Needle felting workshops are offered on a regular basis and are typically of 2-hours duration with no prior experience required.  Needle felting is the process of transforming wool into 3-dimensional objects by using a barbed needle to agitate the wool to bond the fibres together into a solid fabric.  Workshops are based on a particular project and have included objects such as ornaments and tiny animals.

WET FELTING

Wet felting workshops are offered on a regular basis and are typically a half or full day in duration with no prior experience required.  Wet felting is an ancient process whereby wool is transformed into a solid fabric through agitation and friction using hot water and soap. Using modern materials, students learn to lay out wool and practice the steps involved in creating quality felt.  Workshops are based on specific techniques or projects and have included nuno felting, wearable objects and decorative items.

FABRIC DYEING

This adult workshop explores techniques that use Procion MX fabric dyes to yield very interesting results with a minimum amount of effort.  Following a short discussion and demonstration on dye safety and color mixing, students enjoy plenty of time to play with fabric dyeing.  Students dye a minimum of 1 metre of fabric but are welcome to experiment with even more fabric.  No prior experience is required for this workshop.

The Guild frequently offers classes and workshops in other mixed media disciplines which may be of interest to members.  These programs are dependent on student interest and instructor availability and there is no guarantee that they will be repeated.  Examples of classes and workshops that are currently in progress or have been offered recently appear below.
