A phenomenal crop of willow is available for collecting this fall thanks to diligent highway work last year. On the first day of this workshop, we will meet at the Bristol Freighter Monument and carpool to a collecting site to gather the willow that we will later use to make several willow baskets. Participants will be required to wrap their willow in plastic and store it outside to keep it fresh until the creating weekend.
We will meet again over a weekend to create willow baskets. Participants will learn the basic stake and strand method of round willow basketmaking plus several of common willow weaves. A handle can be added if desired. Depending on the size of your baskets, you should be able to make two baskets. Participants should bring a sharp, locking knife, anvil pruners, an old towel and spray bottle.
