This workshop focuses on the basic skills and tools you need to do simple repairs to your clothes: sew on a button, restore a hem, repair a seam. You’d be amazed at what you can repair with just these basics!

1.  We will start at square one: threading a needle, securing the end, whipstitching, running stitches, back stitches, hemming stitches, how to hold your fabric, how to cut with scissors (I’ve been surprised). We’ll practice all of these until they start to become the “muscle memory” you need to make sewing easier and even (gasp!) enjoyable.

2.  We’ll sew on some different types of buttons, do some hemming samples, practice repairing a seam.

3.  We’ll look at whether and how some of the clothes you’ve brought can be mended with these simple skills and you will get started on some repairs.

4.  We’ll see how running stitches can turn mending into art through simple sashiko stitching.

5.  Along the way, we’ll talk about fabrics, needles, thread, basic hand-sewing tools, and how to organize your sewing supplies.

6.  And I’ll pass along my grandmother’s mending philosophy, that has guided me throughout my life!

Each student will receive a small sewing kit. Students should bring several items they want to fix by hand sewing and a pair of scissors if possible.
